Filamentos para impresoras 3D Polymaker FAQ

What is 3D printer filament

3D printer filament is the thermoplastic material used by most desktop 3D printers (FDM/FFF printers). It’s a continuous plastic thread, wound on a spool, that the printer melts and extrudes layer by layer to build a physical object.

How do I choose the right filament for my project?

Select filament based on your project's functional requirements, environmental exposure, and desired finish:

  • Everyday prints, miniatures, prototypes: PLA (Panchroma™ Basic/Matte/Silk) – Easy to print, minimal warping, wide color range
  • Functional parts, outdoor use: PETG or ASA – Strong, flexible, UV and weather-resistant
  • Heat-resistant parts (up to 130°C): Polymaker™ HT-PLA (annealed) or PC – High glass transition and heat deflection temperatures
  • Flexible, rubber-like parts: TPU90 or TPU95 – Shore hardness 90A–95A, high elongation
  • Industrial-grade parts: Fiberon™ PET-CF/GF, PPS-CF/GF – Carbon/glass fiber-reinforced for exceptional stiffness and thermal stability

Refer to Polymaker's Filament Guide for detailed material comparisons and application recommendations.

How should I store 3D printer filament?

Proper storage extends filament lifespan and prevents moisture absorption:

  • Airtight containers: Store filaments in sealed bags or containers with desiccant packs to prevent moisture absorption. f
  • Cool, dry environment: Keep filaments away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and humidity. Ideal storage temperature is 15–25°C with <50% relative humidity.
  • Vacuum-sealed bags: For long-term storage (6+ months), vacuum-seal filaments with desiccant to prevent degradation.
  • Cardboard spool care: Polymaker's 100% recycled cardboard spools are durable but should be stored off the floor to prevent warping or moisture damage.

Signs of moisture-damaged filament include stringing, oozing, inconsistent extrusion, popping sounds during printing, and reduced layer adhesion.

Are Polymaker filaments compatible with AMS/MMU systems?

Most Polymaker filaments are AMS (Bambu Lab) and MMU (Prusa) compatible, including:

  • Compatible: PLA (Basic, Matte, Silk, Dual), PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, PolyMax™ PLA, Panchroma™ lineup
  • Not Compatible: Carbon fiber-reinforced filaments (PLA-CF, PA-CF, PETG-CF, ASA-CF) – Abrasive fibers can damage soft AMS/MMU gears and require hardened steel nozzles.

Always check the specific product page for AMS/MMU compatibility before purchasing.

Do I need a hardened steel nozzle for Polymaker filaments?

Hardened nozzle requirements depend on the material:

  • Standard brass nozzle (0.4mm): PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, PolyMax™ PLA, Panchroma™ Basic/Matte/Silk PLA
  • Hardened steel nozzle required (0.6mm highly recommended): PLA-CF, PA-CF, PA-GF, PET-CF, PETG-CF, ASA-CF, PPS-CF/GF – Carbon fiber and glass fiber are highly abrasive and will quickly wear out brass nozzles.

For best results with abrasive materials, use a 0.6mm hardened steel nozzle to reduce clogging and extend nozzle life.

Can Polymaker filaments be recycled or composted?

Recycling and composting options depend on the material:

  • PLA: Technically biodegradable under industrial composting conditions (high heat and humidity), but does not break down in home compost or landfills. Recycling options are limited; check with local facilities that accept PLA or use filament recyclers like Printerior.
  • PETG, ABS, ASA, PC, Nylon: Not biodegradable but can be recycled through specialized plastic recycling programs in some regions.
  • TPU: Difficult to recycle; specialized recyclers are required.
  • Carbon fiber-reinforced: Not recyclable through standard programs due to fiber contamination.
  • Cardboard spools: 100% recyclable in standard paper/cardboard recycling streams.

Polymaker encourages users to recycle spools and boxes through local recycling programs and explore filament recycling services for used material.
