Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers. From choosing the right material to caring for your spools, here's everything you need to know in one spot.

What is Full Spectrum printing?

Full Spectrum is a technique where ultra-thin layers of translucent filaments are alternated during printing, causing colors to blend optically and create a much wider color palette than your loaded filaments alone. Think of it like how a regular inkjet printer builds millions of colors from just a few inks!

Why do I need translucent filaments for Full Spectrum?

Translucency is key — light passes through each layer and mixes with the layers beneath, creating the blended color effect. Opaque filaments won't blend the same way and can result in visible striping between colors.

What slicer do I need for Full Spectrum?

Full Spectrum printing uses a free open-source fork of OrcaSlicer called FullSpectrum, developed by the community. It handles all the layer alternation automatically.

Do I need a special printer?

Full Spectrum works best on tool-changing printers like the Snapmaker U1, but can also be used with multi-material systems like the AMS. For the smoothest color blending, aim for layer heights between 0.08mm and 0.12mm.

Is this material food safe?

Unfortunately we do not have any data whether this material is food safe. As of now, no 3D printing material on the market is FDA food safe compliant. This is because in order to be certified as food safe, the actual object needs to be certified and not the base material. The shape, bed used, environment the object was made, and much more goes into getting a food safety certificate. As of now there is no real certification that the FDA offers for 3D printing.

Is this material AMS compatible?

Yes! All Polymaker spools now have hardened edges that roll great in the AMS.

Do you sell refills?

We are sorry but we do not sell refills at this time.

Is this material recyclable?

Unfortunately there is no great answer for recycling PLA at this time. Our cardboard spools are biodegradable but there is no great way to recycle PLA at this time.
